Stroke Center Treatments for Patients

A stroke center can be an independent facility that offers a number of services to patients who are suffering from this condition. There are times when patients may just be prone to it but most of the time they are those who are victims. This condition is a result of a rapid loss of brain function. The loss usually occurs when the blood that should be distributed to the brain is disturbed, minimized or cut off due to any reason. The lack of blood flow can be caused by a hemorrhage or blockage. The effect of this lack of blood flow, otherwise known as an ischemia, can be one or more of the following side effects. The side effects can be the inability of the individual to move or control selected or all limbs and muscles on one side of the body, loss of one side of vision or partial loss of one field of vision and the inability to formulate speech or understand speech. Although treatments for these side effects are available for the patient, the scope of the damage may be dependent on how soon the person is brought to the hospital or how soon he or she is treated. Initial treatment for individuals who may suffer from the ischemic damage may be treated through two kinds of surgeries. The first is to get rid of the clot that may be the cause of the blockage and the other is to stop the hemorrhage that is causing the blood flow loss.
Treating the Side Effects
The side effects can be treated at a stroke center after the initial surgery that brings back the blood flow to the brain. The severity of the side effects depends on how long the blood was absent or reduced in the brain. Rehabilitation can be in the form of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Both PT and OT have overlapping concepts, which can be applied to the patient. The goal is to return most if not all of the movement that may have been lost during the lack of blood flow to the brain. A series or combination of exercises, massages and other treatments is usually applied to the victim and the rehabilitation can last for a few days up to several years. The stroke center can also offer speech and language therapy for those whose manifestation of the lack of blood flow is inability to speak properly or inability to understand speech. Experts in physical, occupational and language therapy are necessary for the success of the rehab. The key to the success of the rehabilitation lies on the repetition of the exercises and the determination of the individual to improve. It is imperative that the sessions for each patient be done in the center where the equipment and supplies are complete and immediately on hand.
These are the treatments that a stroke center may offer those who are victims of a stroke. Medical experts should be on hand to supervise and monitor these treatments.
